Dog Days of Summer Come to an End: Tips to Keep You and Your Pet Safe During Labor Day Weekend

Over the next three days I think I have more events planned then I do for the rest of the entire month!  Labor Day weekend is a great time to enjoy time with family and friends and have that last summer celebration before fall begins. Amongst the celebration of good food, college football and time spent with friends I would like to share some tips on how to make this an enjoyable and safe weekend for your dog as well.

Beach Day – If you can’t walk on the sand without wearing your sandals then it’s too hot for your pampered pooch. As a dog lover I enjoy every minute my furbabies can spend time with me.  However due to their loyal nature and the excitement of just being with you I have to remember that their grin and bear it attitude can sometimes leave them uncomfortable or in pain.  A day at the beach with your pet can not only leave you with sunburn but it can leave them with paw burns.  My recommendation would be to hold off on the beach bonding until the weather cools off a little bit.

Cook out – I LOVE cookouts!  The way the air smells when the hamburgers and hot dogs are cooking. However as soon as the food is placed on the grill the dogs go inside I don’t want their curious noses to get to close.  I want to post two friendly sign when we have guest one on the outside gate that reminds guest to make sure they close it behind them and one that reminds them not to feed those furry faces no matter how cute they look when they beg. Some foods are toxic to dogs like onions, grapes, mushrooms, avocados, lunch meat, and more. I want the signs to be friendly and funny but that get the point across any suggestions on wording or ideas?

Water dog – Just one out of my 3 dogs loves to swim but his love for the water definitely makes up for the lack in interest of the other two. For dogs that aren’t good swimmers but enjoy the water they actually make doggie life jackets.  Just like small children never leave a dog unattended when swimming and no matter their skill level always give them a life jacket when ocean swimming. Make sure you have fresh water available at all times. Just like for humans hydration is crucial.

Road trip!- If your pet has never traveled before you need to get them accustomed to car rides before the big trip. Take them on shorter excursions not just when its time for a vet visit. . Making them feel comfortable will significantly reduce car sickness.  Having a bag that’s easily reachable and includes treats, toys, and a portable water bowl is a must have for a long road trip.  Another good idea is to take your dog on a nice walk before you began your trip it can relive some anxiety and they might actually sleep most of the way.  If you don’t think your dog can handle the car ride remember Mutts Barkery offers pet sitting year round (my plug for the day ha ha).

The long Labor Day weekend is meant to be enjoyed by both humans and pets. Be prepared, keep your pet(s) safe, and enjoy your holiday weekend.
